Empty. Sometimes carrying life and sometimes holding on to death. Growing, expanding, transforming. The womb is a place of beginnings, hopes, dreams, joy, fears, and catastrophe. It is a source of pain, a marker of time, but also the locus of miracles. This four-week multi-genre workshop offers space to explore our relationships to this organ and the stories that attach to it. Women of all ages are welcome, including mothers, women who do not want to be mothers, and women for whom motherhood is a question mark. No previous writing experience is required.
This workshop is led by Shatha Almutawa, a mother and the founder of Kutubna Cultural Center. She taught writing at universities in the United States, directed a writing center, and worked as a magazine editor. Her work has been published in magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, edited volumes, academic journals and poetry journals. Her doctoral dissertation, which she wrote at the University of Chicago, focused on philosophical narrative.
