This interactive workshop is designed for writers working on fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. Participants will be introduced to different types of research that historians conduct and a variety of methods of research. In this session, you’ll learn how to find credible primary and secondary sources, use archives, verify information, and conduct interviews. The workshop will also talk about how to make research findings accessible and interesting for readers. We will look at examples of works that use historical research and discuss how the research is woven into the writing.

Dr. Shatha Almutawa is a historian of ideas trained at the University of Chicago, where she received her MA and PhD. She has taught history at a number of higher education institutions in the United States, including Bradley University, Willamette University, and American University in Washington, DC. She has published over 30 articles of historical research in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and magazines. She is the founder and director of Kutubna Cultural Center.
