In this two-part workshop, participants will be introduced to one of the oldest skills of Emirati tradition, Khoos. This traditional weaving skill uses date palm leaves to produce beautiful and functional craft products such as mats, baskets, fans and even sandals. Participants will learn traditional techniques such as date palm leaf processing, hand weaving and sewing skills using only date palm material. Each participant will produce a Khoos product from scratch. No prior experience is required.
Mike Metzger is a sustainability and heritage skills instructor. He was born and raised in the United States. He began his teaching career in traditional heritage and sustainability skills at the age of 18. He has worked with the Sharjah Art Foundation, the Department of Tourism & Culture, and the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency. Aside from his deep love for Emirati traditional heritage, he enjoys traveling in the desert, cooking, and spending time with animals.
